Selected work

Written first. Then built around it.

Some of these are whole websites, written and designed and still looked after today. Some are the message only, handed over and taken somewhere else. The order below is roughly the order I would show you in person.

Fruitful Yield homepage

First sentence, messaging and positioning

Fruitful Yield Health food stores · Chicagoland

“Your personal wellness experts.”

The old line described a category: a grocery chain focused on natural and organic products. Every health food store sells the same shelves, so the work had to be about the people behind the counter rather than the products on them. It ran across the website and a billboard campaign.

What happened

Still running the site today, roughly two years on. Of everything here it is the clearest answer to whether any of this lasts.

FruitfulYield.com

First sentence, positioning and full website copy

America’s Beauty Show Trade show · Chicago

“Crazy-inspiring beauty show packed with badass hair and original people.”

Celebrate is vague. A hundred-year-old show was leading with its own anniversary while all three competitors sold leading B2B event and world-class educational programming. This walks away from that and picks up a large, overlooked part of the market.

What happened

One of the best revenue years for the conference in company history. The work grew from one sentence into the whole website, plus direction on sales and vending materials.

The Nice Guys Delivery website, headlined friendly cannabis delivery for Marin County

Handed over to their internal team afterwards and changed since, so this is what shipped rather than what is up today.

Messaging and website

Nice Guys Delivery Cannabis delivery · Marin County, CA

“Welcome to Nice Guys Delivery” became “friendly cannabis delivery for Marin County.”

The old homepage spent its largest words welcoming you to a page you were already on, then filled the rest of the screen with the return policy, the delivery minimum and the last call for orders. Everything it said was true and none of it was the reason to buy. The new one names what it is, who it is for, and where it goes, in seven words.

What happened

A 12% lift in conversion and a $1.2 million projected annual return. Shortly after launch the site drove the highest single day of revenue in the company’s history. Nothing about the offer changed. The words did.

First sentence, messaging and website

Trademark Cosmetics Contract manufacturing · California

“From beaker to production, quickly.”

The old line assumed the two things that mattered most were that the product was of quality and made with care. Neither was true. Five words now cover the whole process while emphasising the only thing the customer really wanted.

What happened

The day the new site launched, the first enquiry came from the exact person the messaging had been built around. The target customer had been named Ashley. Her name was Ashley.

Brunner Accounting homepage

First sentence and full website copy

Brunner Accounting Accounting · launched 2020

“Smart accounting for business owners who wish it could be easy.”

Written and designed in 2020 and still live today, which is the harder test. The original concepts, the strategy and the copy are all still driving the site. Six years of return on one engagement, and almost none of it has been replaced.

BrunnerAccounting.com

First sentence

CFO Simplified Fractional CFOs · Chicago

“The sound financial leadership you need right now.”

Statements that meant a great deal to the business and nothing to the reader. The new sentence promotes what a 45 year old finance lead is actually looking for, and right now quietly carries the founder's best trait: he can navigate a crisis on the first call.

What happened

The founder started printing the new sentence on cards for networking events. It made him easy to place in a category, and the referrals followed. It is still on his site today and has been driving his strategy for three years.

CFOsimplified.com
Katy Mickelson homepage

Messaging and website

Katy Mickelson Divorce attorney · Chicago

Every divorce attorney describes the same service. She leads with the cases she takes.

Every divorce attorney in the city sells the same thing in the same words: compassionate, aggressive, results driven. None of it tells somebody at the worst point of their life whether this lawyer takes cases like theirs. Hers names the cases, so the wrong caller screens themselves out and the right one knows on the first line. The language stays careful throughout, allocating assets rather than dividing them, and nobody is called an expert.

KatyMickelson.com

First sentence

Caxy Custom software · Chicago

“Remove friction from your customer interactions.”

A big concept with a generic solution. Custom technology could mean any number of things and never touched the pain that brought someone to the page. The new sentence picks one problem and promotes the end result of solving it. Caxy later brought the site in house and has been testing new directions since.

Caxy.com
Abel Concrete homepage

Messaging, positioning and website

Abel Concrete Contractor · Villa Park, IL

“I just need a good concrete guy.”

The headline is a direct quote from the builders who hire him, because it is the sentence they actually say out loud. Everything under it answers the real fear, which is that the first sub on site blows the schedule and the homeowner blames you.

What happened

His website had never produced a lead. Four came in during the first two weeks after launch, worth a potential $25,000 in new work.

AbelConcrete.com

First sentence

VacayHQ Travel rewards · consumer app

“Glow up your next vacation with travel rewards points.”

Credit and free both set off alarms. Even a reader who wants to boost their credit is sceptical of anything being free. The new sentence speaks directly to a 20 year old, drops the scary words, and leads with the outcome.

Chicago Pizza Tours homepage

Messaging and website

Chicago Pizza Tours Food tours · client since 2017

Corporate bookings went from a rounding error to most of the business.

The longest relationship here. The work has run from the message through the website to the booking flow and the content behind it.

What happened

Corporate share of revenue went from 5% to 60%, revenue up 80%, and a single group booking closed at $10,000 inside three months.

ChicagoPizzaTours.com

First sentence

Intentional Training Online course

“Real, lasting change in your life.”

It spoke only to what the person was getting instead of why they wanted it. By the time someone lands on that page they already know it is a course. The new sentence names the result they came for.

Eat Free Tacos website
Eat Free Tacos on a phone

Messaging and website

Matt Pittman Realtor · Chicago suburbs

A realtor who gives away tacos, and means it.

Most agent sites are an interchangeable headshot and a listings feed. Matt is a musician who genuinely enjoys this, so his pages read like a punk zine rather than a brochure. This one gives away tacos and is exactly as serious as that sounds.

EatFreeTacos.com
Digital Guidebooks homepage

Messaging, positioning and website

Digital Guidebooks SaaS startup · Chicago

“More tips. More emails. More reviews.”

The old line sold the product: it lets guests follow along with your tour on their phone. Operators argued with the features. The new one sells the outcome, so the conversation is about what an operator gets rather than what the app does.

What happened

Launched in March and still a private rollout. A quarter of the tour operators who have seen it are already paying for it. That number will come down as the rollout widens, and it is still an absurd place to be starting from.
